Wed 10:30 am session: Why Do Metrics get a Bad Rap?

Why Do Metrics get a Bad Rap? - Gina Anzaldo @ginabean

misuse?
measuring wrong thing?
bad scope?
cost of gathering data?
  • self-supporting metrics are low cost: cycle time, escaped defects, happiness, planned/done

What is the purpose of metric? What question are you asking?
  • progress, improvement, quality, customer value
Who is he audience for the metric? Teams? Managers?
Teams:
  • stable, mature teams > build history > to predictability
  • hard to have good metrics on new or changing teams with any confidence

Management:
  • success, coordination
What sort of visibility do you give for metrics? transparency issues.

"Metrics don't kill teams. Managers with bad/misused metrics do."
"Build people not teams."

metrics discussed: cumulative flow, velocity, points complete, scrum plop, FTE, net promoter, lines of code.

Use forecasting - monte carlo
Analysis to help managers answer - How long? When will it be done?

Helps managers be people managers, not task managers.
